How to Write a Feature Article

by Bill Brine

Picture of Bill Brine, author of this article How to Write a Feature Article

Writing a feature article differs from writing a news article. A news article is written with the intent of presenting objective information about an event, a person, an idea or a situation. This style focuses on the facts of the story. A feature expands on the facts. It can interpret the news or add some depth to the story. It can entertain or educate the audience as well.

When you learn how to write a feature article, you are introduced to several steps that will lead you in the direction of a well rounded piece that is enjoyable for your audience to read. These steps include finding an audience, developing a story and creating a sound structure for your final draft.

You may already have a number of stories that you are dying to tell. You want your magnificent insight to be shared by the masses and you believe that once you have learned how to write a feature article, the reading world will be at your feet. However, not everyone may find the stories as interesting as you do. It is crucial that you target an audience in order to cater the article to their interests.

Part of finding an audience lies in finding a publisher. The best way to find what appeals to readers is to read current articles by authors who know how to write a feature article. You may find a certain publisher chooses features that appeal to you and suit your style. Instead of spending time completing a piece that may not sell, approach the publisher you have researched with a proposal for your idea.

Include samples of your writing that you think will appeal to the publisher as well. This will demonstrate that you know how to write a feature article. Remember that a good writer is in essence a good reader. Proofread your work before submitting and keep in mind the kind of articles you have read. If yours are up to speed, send them with your proposal.

So you’ve sent your proposal and samples and you’ve nailed the assignment. Now comes the time for you to show the publisher that you really know how to write a feature article. Break down the task into three segments: the introduction, the body and the conclusion.

The introduction is extremely important. This section grabs the audience’s attention and pulls the readers into the story. It also sets the tone of the piece. An author who knows how to write a feature article has mastered the art of grabbing someone’s attention. The body should contain accurate information, anecdotes and quotations. Make sure to use more than one resource and give more than one perspective.

The conclusion pulls it all together. Try to develop your ending in advance and keep it strong. The conclusion is important because it will help the reader remember the article. Once you have learned how to write a feature article, the conclusions you develop will make a lasting impression on your new-found audience....
